Context

Although it is obviously not the only one, death in combat is an integral part of the combat experience and thus gives rise to a particular memory within the Nation. The aim of this fact sheet is to present the monument dedicated to the soldiers who died for France in overseas operations, which will be inaugurated on 11 November 2019 in Paris, by placing it in the history of commemorative monuments of previous conflicts, and particularly those of the Great War, which constitute the archetype.

In doing so, we will examine the elements of continuity and rupture between the existing monuments and this latest achievement, as well as the duty of remembrance towards the younger generations, in which the OPEX must now take their full place.
