PASS THE FLAME ON

Letter TO THE CONTACT N°47

Dear friends in the Army,

In this month of November, I will remember the men and women of the Army who gave their lives for our country.

As we approach the 11 November commemorations, it is important to remember how much this event expresses the gratitude of the entire nation to all the soldiers who fell for France. In view of the health circumstances, our remembrance activities, especially those planned between our units and French youth, will necessarily be adapted.

However, we are maintaining, as a symbol, Operation "Pass the Torch", a relay race of soldiers in arms, between Verdun and the Arc de Triomphe, from the evening of November 6 to 10, to commemorate the centennial of the transfer and burial of the unknown soldier. This commemorative activity can be followed on various social networks.

November 11th is a privileged moment to surround our wounded and the families of deceased soldiers. In recent years, our regiments have experienced continuous combat operations with Afghanistan, the Central African Republic, Iraq, Mali and many other theatres. The Army pays for this operational commitment in the flesh. Since the beginning of the year 2020, 14 of our comrades have been killed in the accomplishment of their mission. Death, mourning and brotherhood in arms are part of our identity as soldiers.

As such, the commemoration of the commitment of our elders, for our freedom, is structuring for our units. It deserves that we make November 11th a moment of recollection and reflection to help us grow individually and collectively.

Army General Thierry Burkhard
