Microsoft Corp. has won a $480 million contract to provide the Army with prototype augmented reality systems for combat missions and training, the Army said.

The contract, which could eventually lead to the purchase of more than 100,000 headsets by the military, is intended to "increase lethality by improving the ability to detect, decide and fight in front of the enemy," according to a government description of the program.

"Augmented reality technology will provide troops with more and better information to make decisions. This new work extends our long-standing relationship of trust with the Department of Defense into this new area," a Microsoft spokesman said in an e-mail release.

The U.S. Army and the Israeli military have already used Microsoft HoloLens devices for training, but live combat plans would be a big step forward.
